United States Olympic Committee recognises USA Ultimate

WFDF is pleased to announce that USA Ultimate (USAU) was recognized by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) on 10 June 2014 as a USOC Recognized Sport Organization.
“We are extremely excited to hear the news about the formal recognition of USA Ultimate, WFDF’s largest member association, by the United States Olympic Committee,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “This is an important acknowledgement of the successful role USAU plays in organizing the entire gamut of Ultimate events in the US from elite competition to grass roots development. It is also another confirmation from the Olympic Movement that our focus on ‘spirit of the game’ is seen as a selling point and not a hindrance to acceptance in the world of sport.”

WFDF releases updated Appendix to the Rules of Ultimate

WFDF is pleased to announce that the updated Appendix to the Rules of Ultimate is released. The Appendix incorporates the recommendations that were made regarding Game Advisors as part of the Interim Report of the WFDF Spirit of the Game (SOTG) Task Force.
This Interim Report was released, along with the Final Report, on June 4. The Final Report included additional recommendations regarding the role of Game Advisors, and these additional recommendations, if approved by Congress at Lecco in August, will be considered for future updates.

Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) recognizes Japan Flying Disc Association (JFDA)

WFDF is pleased to announce that the Japan Flying Disc Association (JFDA) was approved by the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) on 9 June 2014 as a JOC-recognized organization.
“We are extremely pleased about this news from Asia about the formal recognition of our largest member association on the continent by the Japanese Olympic Committee,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch.

WFDF Seeks Bids to Host WFDF 2015 Asia-Oceanic Guts Club Championships (AOGCC)

WFDF’s Board of Directors and Ultimate Committee are seeking bids from potential host organizers for the WFDF 2015 Asia-Oceanic Guts Club Championships (AOGCC).
The AOGCC 2015 will be the first ever Club Championships in the Asian-Oceania region for the flying disc sport of Guts. The event is expected to be held bi-annually and is comprised of club teams competing in the Guts divisions.

WFDF Board of Directors approves final report and recommendations of Spirit of the Game Task Force

Interim recommendations already adopted for implementation at WUCC, other proposals to be reviewed at Congress
WFDF is pleased to announce that the final report and recommendations of the Spirit of the Game (SOTG) Task Force have been approved by its Board of Directors and now are published for review by the Flying Disc community under this link to the final report and recommendations.
“We are extremely pleased to publish this final report of the SOTG Task Force, which received unanimous support by the Board of Directors. It is the culmination of nearly nine months of work by all of the members of the task force in evaluating some difficult and, at times, contentious topics,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “The task force was led by Rueben Berg who organized the discussions clearly and kept the group very focused over the entire period. I am pleased with the result and believe that the revisions which are to be introduced in two phases have achieved our stated objectives.”

WFDF Athletes’ Commission elections 2014 – call for nominations

WFDF had established its first ever Athletes’ Commission with elections held during the WUGC 2012 in Sakai, Japan. As the initial term of the Commission members comes to an end in 2014 during World Ultimate Club Championships (WUCC), WFDF is now putting out a new call for nominations for the Athletes’ Commission to be voted on by the participating athletes at the WFDF 2014 WUCC in Lecco, Italy.
The WFDF Athletes’ Commission was established to promote open communication with, and solicit feedback from, current elite flying disc athletes, and give them a formal role in the decision-making process of WFDF. The WFDF Athletes’ Commission has as its main focus the issues facing athletes in the sport of Ultimate, as this is our largest disc sport constituency and the one that is involved in the World Games.

WFDF’s Board of Directors and Ultimate Committee are seeking bids from potential host organizers for the WFDF 2016 World Ultimate & Guts Championships (WUGC).
The WUGC is the premier world championship event for the flying disc disciplines of Ultimate and Guts. The event is held every four years and is comprised of national teams competing in Ultimate in the Open, Women’s, Mixed, Open Masters, Women’s Masters divisions, and in Guts. The event was first held in 1983 in Gothenburg Sweden and was most recently held in 2012 Sakai, Japan.

Pope Francis is introduced to Frisbee! Andrew Hochstedler, an American expat who plays with the Turkish Ultimate Team “Türk Kasi,” recently met the Pope in connection with the 2015 Assisi Youth Conference in Rome and presented a disc to him. The artwork on the disc presented shows the name of the team which was founded and led by Brother Hochstedler. The picture shows Pope Francis with the disc that was presented (photo by Joel Perera).

Fumio Morooka of WFDF elected as IWGA Executive Committee member

The International World Games (IWGA) Annual General Meeting in Belek, Turkey, has elected WFDF Board member Fumio Morooka as member of its Executive Committee. Mr. Morooka was elected by the assembly to serve a four year term until 2018. During the same meeting, José Perurena Lopez (ICF – Canoeing) was elected as IWGA President, succeeding Ron Froehlich who had held the post for the last two dozen years. The balance of the Executive Committee of IWGA will consist of Max Bishop (FAI – Aeronautics) as Vice-President, Lukas Hinder (IDSF – Dance Sport) as Treasurer, and Board members Anna Arzhanova (CIMS – Subaquatics) and Tom Dielen (WA – World Archery).

WFDF Congress approves Estonian Flying Disc Federation as regular member

WFDF is pleased to announce that the Congress has approved the Estonian Flying Disc Federation (EFDF) as regular national member association of the World Flying Disc Federation. The acceptance of this new regular member stabilizes the WFDF membership at 60 member associations in 56 countries. “The Congress has admitted the member association from Estonia unanimously. Estonia has been a WFDF provisional member for several years and has previously participated in a WFDF sanctioned event".

VC Ultimate, based in Toronto, Canada, will have the exclusive rights to develop and sell any and all official event merchandise and apparel for the WFDF’s world and continental championships over this period beginning with the WFDF World Under-23 Ultimate Championship this summer in London. In return, this partnership will provide benefits to the players and teams, event organizers, and to WFDF. VC Ultimate will also work with WFDF to develop and market WFDF-branded gear to be sold through their Canadian, American and European online stores.

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) has released its 2015 International Program Guide, which provides in-depth information on disc golf activities and protocol in all countries outside of the USA and Canada. In 2014, the 10th year of the PDGA’s International Program, there were 3,100+ International Members, 360+ sanctioned events, and 28 PDGA affiliated countries in Europe, Asia, and Oceania.

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) today has released its strategic plan for the period 2015-2018. This four-year strategic plan was developed by the members of the WFDF Board of Directors during its recent face-to-face meeting in Toronto after reviewing input from Member associations and 3,400 individual members of the disc community through a global questionnaire. This document spells out WFDF’s vision and values, its core strategies, and the tactics for achieving them.

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) today has announced the results of its 2014 elections. The WFDF Member Associations voted on open positions on the Board of Directors and on the Ultimate Committee to serve from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2016.

The WFDF Board composition was confirmed as an extremely qualified and experienced slate of candidates for the upcoming period of two years.”

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) today announced the appointment of the Spirit of the Game Directors for the 2015 BULA & WFDF World Championships of Beach Ultimate (www.wcbu2015.org): Richard Moore from Australia will be the Spirit Director and Kate Barabanova from Russia will be the Assistant Spirit Director.
The highly anticipated event will be held 8-13 March 2015 in Dubai and will host over 1,000 athletes from 25 countries who will compete in the fully self-refereed team sport of Beach Ultimate. As for all flying disc sports, Spirit of the Game (SOTG) is the most important rule. It involves elements such as fair play, rules knowledge and the respect that players hold for one-another.

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that it has officially recognized a new world record for the longest outdoor throw of a flying disc. On Saturday October 25, 2014, Germany’s Simon Lizotte threw the disc an incredible 263.2 meters (863.5 feet) while competing at the Fall Desert Wind Open Distance event in Primm, Nevada, USA. Lizotte’s throw flew the length of two and a half regulation football (soccer) pitches. Lizotte was using a 157g Innova Blizzard Boss disc and threw with a 17mph wind at his back, with the throw confirmed by a spotter using an approved distance finder.

WFDF announces that the Congress has revoked the regular membership of the Flying Disc Federation of India (FDFI) and subsequently approved the application from the Ultimate Players Association of India (UPAI) for regular membership.
“This has been a very difficult process as we of course wanted to give our incumbent member FDFI the most favorable opportunity to present their case,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch.

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has conveyed on WFDF the status of an “IPC recognised International Federation (IF).” IPC Chief Executive Officer Xavier Gonzalez signed the letter confirming the approval of WFDF’s application sent last month outlining Wheelchair Ultimate activities in several countries including the USA, Canada, Germany and Japan.

WFDF is pleased to announce the hosts and event dates of two 2015 key events. The WFDF 2015 World Under 23 Ultimate Championships (WU23) will be held in the city of London, United Kingdom, while the WFDF 2015 PanAmerican Ultimate Championships (PAUC) will be staged in Mexico.
The WU23 will be held from 12 to 18 July 2015 and be hosted by UK Ultimate acting as the Tournament Organizing Committee (TOC). Responsible for the organization will be UKU CEO Simon Hill, who formerly served as WFDF’s Ultimate Committee chair. The event will be staged at the University College London (UCL) Sports Ground, in St Albans just north of London. The last WU23 was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, which hosted 36 teams from 17 nations in 3 divisions: Open, Women’s, and Mixed. Over 900 athletes, coaches, and managers had visited Toronto for the Championships. These three divisions will be competing in London in 2015 again.

The WJUC is the premier world junior championship event for the flying disc discipline of Ultimate. The event is held bi-annually and is comprised of national teams competing in the Junior U19 Open and the Junior U19 Women’s divisions. The event was most recently held in 2014 Lecco, Italy.
