Colchester, England to host the WFDF 2017 World Team Disc Golf Championships
07 December 2016
The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that the WFDF 2017 World Team Disc Golf Championships (WTDGC 2017) will be played in the city of Colchester on the Classic Course at the University of Essex from Wednesday 23rd – Saturday 26th August, 2017. Located in southern England, Colchester hosted the 2012 European Disc Golf Championships and has been re-designed and re-equipped with new baskets for this event. Technical Director Charlie Mead has coordinated with the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) and they have determined that the WTDGC 2017 will be a Major event. This will help bring interest from the top players in the world for points and rankings and also increase visibility among the community.
The WFDF 2017 WTDGC are the second ever and will see teams from 24 countries competing with 6 players in each round from 4 divisions (Open, Women, Masters, and Juniors). However, new this year is the option for teams to bring as many as 12 players, designating 6 players per round. This will help team captains keep players fresh and also strategize about which players to play in each round. There will be a minimum of 8 rounds for all teams of 6 before the quarter final stage so all players are guaranteed a lot of golf. The WTDGC 2016 was held in Vancouver, Canada and played host to 6 teams including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and USA, with 6 players per team. The USA came out on top winning the Gold medal while New Zealand won Silver and Japan won Bronze.
“It’s always special when you can host an event at a venue with such rich Frisbee history,” said WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “This will be the first standalone WFDF World Championship Disc Golf event that has been hosted outside of the USA and we are extremely pleased to have the full support of the PDGA on this historic event. We anticipate that the WTDGC will not only help grow awareness for disc golf in the UK but also help raise the profile of disc golf on an International level especially for the nations whose athletes are competing.”
“Essex University has a long history of hosting WFDF World Ultimate and Overall Championships and PDGA sanctioned National and European Disc Golf Championships,” said WFDF Disc Golf Committee Chair Charlie Mead. “The University of Essex considers this Flying Disc championship history so important that they mention disc golf on their facts and figures webpage. I am delighted that all these organisations are working together and committed to making 2017 WTDGC a success. The Tournament Organising Committee has plans in place to make this event a milestone in Disc Golf history - leaving a further legacy of development in Britain and across the world. We all look forward to welcoming the largest number of national Disc Golf teams ever gathered together for a tournament since the sport began nearly five decades ago.” Mead has been an avid Ultimate and Disc Golf athlete himself, and had won the Open Division of the European Disc Golf Championships which were held at Essex as long ago as 1982.
